PROJECTS FOR STUDENTS

PROJECT "PHENOMENON"

"Wonder is next door"

Phenomenon is an unusual thing in nature, culture, science - in everyday life around us, as well as inside people. You can find phenomena in all educational areas: Mathematics and Music, in Astronomy and Literature, in Arts and History.

Phenomena could only be seen by those people, who are unusual themselves, who are capable to look inside the things, are ready to wonder.

The main goal of project "PHENOMENON" is to help kids from 6 to 16 years old to show their own abilities to see and learn great secrets of the surrounding world.
The project is carried out via E-mail. The participants make reports on their research and send their works to the project "PHENOMENON" committee: andreykh@mail.ru

Also, there is E-mail conference among the participants in Russian and English for discussing the project creative works.

Project Stages:
students registration for project "PHENOMENON" (deadline - November 15, 1998).
sending creative works to the project "PHENOMENON" committee (deadline - November 25, 1998)

E-mail conference on discussion the participants works (November 30, 1998)
awarding the winners of the project (November 30, 1998)
start of distance course "How To See the World" (the winners can take the course FREE!) December 7, 1998

Winners of the project are defined in three age groups: 6-9 years, 10-13 years, 14-16 years. The best works will be posted in a cabinet of curious phenomena on Distance Education Center "Eidos" server.

Participation in project "PHENOMENON"

Study of phenomenon is conducted individually. It is also allowed to carry out group work. Local coordinators only do their help in work organization: text typing(for the smallest kids), pictures scanning, other technical things. The main criteria for creative works value is its contents.

Phenomenon Study Algorithm:
1. Write or draw discovered by you phenomenon giving to it a notion, a drawing or a symbol.
2. Describe your own feelings and thoughts, appearing while observing the phenomenon.
3. Describe your activities on studying the phenomenon.
4. Show the uncommoness of the phenomenon, its essence, qualities which distinguish it from other similar phenomena.
5. Formulate a question or a problem concerning the phenomenon.
6. Offer your versions and hypothesis explaining the phenomenon.
7. Draw your conclusions on the study.

Additional questions to help:

How can you find phenomena? What is the way of its studying? What is the role of the phenomena in our lives and education? What happened to us while contacting the phenomena? Phenomena and common things - where is the borderline? Phenomena in different educational areas (nature, mathematics, languages, culture, art, religion, craft and others) - do they bear any resemblance?

Reports are typed in English. Drawings and schemes are enclosed. Results of the project will be sent to all the participants.

The project is carried out in one of the two variants:
1. In hypertext (html (htm)), photo (jpg) and pictures (gif). The files with illustrations, sound, animation or video must not exceed 70 Kb for one separately. The text and pictures are sent in (zip, arj) as appendix to the letter.
2. Completely in text; pictures are made either with the help of marks and symbols available on the keyboard of the computer or in gif.

"MY VIRTUAL HOME"

In what house do you want to live in the future?
Would you like to have a virtual home?!

Russian Distance Education Center "Eidos " http://www.eidos.ru invites students of different ages and nations to take part in a project on developing their own virtual home to live in.

William H.Gates, the composer of computer future of the mankind, constructed a remarkable house for himself. Each visitor is given an electronic badge, which sends signals to computer system of the house; when you enter a room, the lights are on; there are huge screens on the walls showing beautiful pictures and photos. The computer system remembers all your preferences, and when you pass through the rooms you are accompanied with the video chosen by you or your favorite music.

The Idea of Project:

Home is a projection of a person who lives in it. Your virtual home is a realization of your purposes in the future life full of computer technologies. Think of your future virtual home, which you can create for yourself and your family, and design it using computer.

Draw the basic ideas and elements of your virtual home. Try simultaneously to write down and sketch arising images. You can also include multimedia means (sound, animation, video) in the project of your virtual home.

Participation in Project:

The students of three age groups can be participants in the project: 5-9 y.o., 10-13 y.o. and 14-16 y.o. The project can be carried out either individually or under the direction of the teacher - coordinator.

To participate in the project it is necessary to send the application (the form is applied below) and the project to the address: andreykh@mail.ru no later than 30 April 1998.

Prizes:
Best projects will published on our Web-server and people from Russia and other countries of the former Soviet Union will be able to see your view of the virtual home. You will win the world glory! You can also compare your projects with those of Russian students which will soon appear on Center "Eidos" server.

Criteria of Project Estimation:
1. Original, non-standard ideas of virtual home and forms of their realization.
2. Skill to apply computer means to express contents of the story in the non-standard form.
3. Quality of the project illustrations.

Requirements to Contents:
1. The story is original in its contents and form and is not similar to those described by writers or shown on TV;
2. The story comprises ideas of people and computer communications in the future;
3. The main participant of the story is its author.

Technical Requirements:
